Reasons Why Tape Won't Stick to the Polyethylene Sheeting...

Let's talk about adhesive tape that is touted to stick to plastic sheeting (polyethylene sheeting) that is commonly used in various industrial applications. The tape is designed to adhere to a variety of substrates, including metals, plastics, and other materials. However, in some cases, the tape may not stick well to polyethylene surfaces. There are several reasons why this could happen:

  1. Low surface energy: Polyethylene has a relatively low surface energy, which means that it can be difficult for adhesives to bond to it. This can make it challenging for some tapes to adhere to polyethylene surfaces.

  2. Surface contamination: If the surface of the polyethylene is contaminated with oils, dirt, or other substances, this can interfere with the ability of the tape adhesive to bond to the surface. Even small amounts of contamination can prevent the adhesive from forming a strong bond.

  3. Incompatible adhesive chemistry: Certain fire retardant  tape are designed to work with a range of substrates, but it may not be compatible with all types of polyethylene. If the tape adhesive chemistry is not compatible with the particular type of polyethylene used, it may not adhere well to the surface. When slip or other processing aids are used, they make the surface of the polyethylene more slippery, so it slides through the manufacturing equipment more easily, and can be run much faster.  But it remains on the surface on a microscopic level, and makes it more difficult for tape to adhere well. By nature, the surface of the polyethylene is smooth and slippery, so many tapes do not adhere well, even when no processing aids are used.  

  4. Temperature and humidity: The environment in which the tape is applied can also affect its ability to bond to polyethylene. If the temperature or humidity is too high or too low, this can interfere with the curing process of the adhesive, which can prevent it from forming a strong bond. The temperature of the tape when applied also affects the adhesion level. Tape should be applied at room temperature if possible.  The cooler the temperature, the lower the adhesion.  How smooth the finish is for each production run varies depending on temperature and humidity in our manufacturing facility. The smoother the finish,  the harder it is for the tape to adhere.

  5. Pressure during Installation: Tape is pressure sensitive.  The more pressure used during installation, the higher the adhesion.  And the adhesion increases as the adhesive wets out on the surfaces being bonded.  The higher the initial pressure, the better the final bond.

  6. Density Range:  The polyethylene has a density range.  At the lowest end of the range it is less smooth than at the highest end of the range. This varies with every batch of resin, and every production run.

  7. The Solution: To improve the adhesion of certain tapes to polyethylene surfaces, it may be necessary to prepare the surface by cleaning it thoroughly and using a primer or other surface treatment to increase its surface energy. Additionally, selecting a different tape formulation or adhesive chemistry may be necessary if the tape is not compatible with the particular type of polyethylene being used.

As you can see, a number of factors may come into play as to why a tape is not sticking to polyethylene plastic sheeting.

20 mil Reinforced Plastic Sheeting- What's It For?

20 Mil reinforced plastic sheeting is  a heavy duty high strength polyethylene film that is very resistant to tearing and overall damage. 20 mil reinforced polyethylene film, also known as RPE film, is a type of plastic film that is commonly used in a variety of industrial and construction applications, crawl space lining and encapsulation, aquaponics and anywhere a tough yet affordable poly film is required.

One of the most common uses for RPE film is as a vapor barrier in construction. When building a structure, it is important to prevent moisture from penetrating the walls and causing damage. RPE film is often used as a barrier between the foundation and the framing of a building to prevent moisture from entering the structure. The film is also used to seal the joints between walls and floors to prevent air and water infiltration.

Another common use for RPE film is as a liner in pond and lake construction. The film is used to create a barrier between the water and the soil to prevent leaks and seepage. The Cons of Utilizing HDPE:

It is high flammability, sensitivity to stress cracking, inability to be biodegradable, inability to be composted, lack of resistance to oxidizing acids, lack of resistance to chlorinated hydrocarbons, and its high thermal expansion.

The advantages of using HDPE are as follows:

HDPE has many advantages, such as being cost-effective, able to withstand temperatures ranging from -148 to 176 degrees Fahrenheit, non-leaching, UV-resistant, dishwasher safe, resistant to most chemical solvents, and a stiff material.

Common Uses of High Density Polyethylene of HDPE

High-density polyethylene or HDPE is a commonly used petroleum thermoplastic and the most used of the three polyethylenes for a wide range of applications. If you look at this plastic under a microscope, you would see that it has a linear structure with few branches lending to its optimal strength/density ratio. As a result of its molecular makeup, this polymer shines brightest in applications where moisture resistance and cost-effectiveness are needed.

Is HDPE as strong as steel?

While HDPE has an impressive ultimate tensile strength of 4,600 psi, Grade 304 stainless steel has an ultimate tensile strength of 73,200 psi. As such, steel is significantly stronger than HDPE when it comes to resistance to impacts and heavy loads.

How long will HDPE last?

The typical benchmark for HDPE life expectancy is 50 years; however, per the Plastics Pipe Institute, HDPE pipe used in municipal potable water systems can have a lifespan of over 100 years.

Fireproof Plastic- Is there a plastic that is fireproof? What plastics are fireproof?

If you have ever seen plastic sheeting burn, it goes up in flames and doesn't stop until it's completed its mission.

Let's define "fireproof" as the ablility to withstand fire or great heat.

Fireproof, flame resistant and fire retardant are often interchanged to mean the same thing.

Is there a plastic that is fireproof? 

Plastic in its natural state is not fireproof but it is possible to make plastic that is fireproof.  The secret is incorporating hydrated magnesium oxide or aluminum oxide, as well as phosphorus or bromine compounds, into low-density polyethylene. When exposed to fire, the compounds break down and absorb the heat energy, thus preventing the plastic from burning. The plastic doesnt burn, it melts.

Some if not most states  require commercial establishments to comply with the use of fire retardant plastic sheeting for their events such as amusement parks, schools, haunted houses and so on. What is Polypropylene?

Polypropylene while being a plastic polymer shouldn't be confused with polyethylene. Polypropylene is more versatile than polyethylene because it is has a higher melting point (320 degrees Fahrenheit) than polyethylene which melts at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally it can be produced in a variety of structures which suits the building and construction industry very well.  Polypropylene is used to make rope, indoor-outdoor carpeting and drainage mats.
