Organic Certification for Aquaponics/ Hydroponics

Question: Do you issue organic certification for your plastic sheeting that you recommend for aquaponics and/or hydroponics?Aquaponics Fish Safe Plastic

Aquaponics Plastic

Answer:  It's best to go to your local certifying board and request a laundry list of items that they deem acceptable.  Each certifying board may approach this differently.  The best bet is to be proactive, bringing them our data sheet for Dura-Skrim 20WW (fish and shrimp safe). Please visit our Aquaponics page for more information.

Unlike organic farming your system is based on soil-less growing conditions and the rules and regulations for organic certifications are based on traditional farming.  You will want to use plastics that are fish safe. If the plastic is potable water safe, then that is even better.

Haunted House NFPA Code

Question:  Which NFPA code covers structures such as haunted houses?

Fire retardant plastic

Answer:  NFPA 101 3.3.25.8 defines haunted houses as, "a building that is temporary, permanent, or mobile that contains a device or system that conveys passengers or provides a walkway along, around or over a course in any direction as a form of amusement arranged so that the egress path is not readily apparent due to visual or audio distractions or intentionally confounded egress path, or is not readily available due to mode of conveyance through the building or structure.  Such structures include amusement such as haunted house, a roller coaster type ride within a building, a multilevel play structure within a building, a submarine ride, and similar amusements where the occupants are not in the open air."

If you visit the NFPA site you, look for section NFPA 101 12.11 (Assembly Occupancies) and section 13.4.7 (Special Amusement Buildings), you will find requirements for Haunted Houses.  The local fire authority has jurisdiction over enforcing all applicable fire and life safety regulations.  We have heard from haunted house customer after customer who has had their haunted house shut down on the spot for not having fire retardant plastic sheeting. Non-fire retardant plastic goes up in flames in a flash. This is why fire marshal's insist upon Fire retardant plastic- whether it is black or white.

ASTM E84 - Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials

Question:  Does ASTM E84 measure of heat transmission through a tested surface?

Answer:  No it does not. ASTM E84 is looking at the surface burning behavior of a building material when it is exposed to flames. For example, what is the flame spread and smoke density when flames hit a ceiling. Flame spread and smoke developed index are reported. However, there is not necessarily a relationship between these two measurements. The resulting values are stated in inch-pound units, which is to be regarded as standard.  This standard is used to measure and describe the response of materials, products, or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions. The test does not assess the fire-hazard or fire-risk assessment of the materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions..

How to use Sandbags to slow Flood Water

Question:   Our home is located near the Missouri River.  The levee has failed near the Iowa-Missouri border, prompting a flash flood warning. Will sandbags help divert the water from my home?

Answer:  Using sandbags is an effective way to prevent or reduce water damage from the flood waters. By properly filling the sandbags, and strategically placing them such that they can act as a barrier to divert moving water- the goal being keeping your structure drier than it would be left un-sandbagged. Please understand that setting up a sandbag wall does not guarantee a water-tight seal, but it does a satisfactory job in most cases.

There are pros and cons to tying the sandbags.  If the situation is a temporary one, untied sandbags are recommended. If you want to stockpile the sandbags, then pre-filling and stockpiling tied bags is the best bet.Tied bags are easier to stockpile and handle- but they are heavy.  It is best if they can be stored near the placement site.

There are two types of sandbag material most commonly used.  The burlap bags can be stored and saved for emergency use.  They will be serviceable for several years if property stored. Once burlap bags are filled however, the earth will decay the burlap rather quickly.

The other option is to obtain commercial plastic sandbags, (click here for sandbags).  They can be stored for a long time, and will not biodegrade when filled with earth. If the sandbag is made from a scrim reinforced plastic, it will not tear, and will hold up very well. There is no need to double bag these bags as they are strong.
