Geomembrane For Use In Extreme Cold
Question: My company is looking for a geomembrane that will hold up in EXTREME COLD- Alaska type cold. We want something that will survive the harshest imaginable climate.
Answer: The most durable as well as strongest geomembrane in use today is called, XR-5. If you are in Alaska drilling for oil, needing to contain oil or contain landfills, this is the best bet! Permeability for HDPE Geomembranes
Question: Is HDPE essentially impermeable?
Answer: Customers often ask if GPS HDPE is impermeable. Polyethylene due to its chemical structure is essentially and impermeable substance. The use of the word, "essentially" comes into play due to the existence of molecular voids or "free space" among individual polyethylene chains. There can be permeation when the pressure behind the permeant is quite high, or the molecular size of the permeant is very small. Understandably different chemicals will permeate at different tares due to varying molecular shapes, polarity and whether it is a gas or a liquid. Another thing to consider is the fact that a HDPE Geomembrane is not usually subjected to high pressures except for when it is tested in a permeation lab.
