Polyester Strapping, Polyester Woven Strapping, Polypropylene Strapping - What's The Difference?

Why is woven polyester (Poly Cord) strapping so popular?

Polyester Woven Strapping

Polyester Strapping: A Versatile and Strong Packaging Solution

What is Strapping?
Strapping is a flat, durable material used to bundle, secure, and reinforce items during storage, handling, or transportation. It is crucial in industries like agriculture, construction, shipping, packaging, and lumber, where items need to be securely held together. Strapping offers more strength and reliability than twine or string, ensuring the integrity of the load. Common types of strapping include steel, plastic, and woven polyester strapping, each designed for specific applications and load requirements.

Types of Plastic Strapping

Plastic strapping, also known as poly strapping, is commonly available in three main types, each with unique features:

  1. Polypropylene Strapping
Polypropylene strapping is a cost-effective solution for light to medium-duty applications such as palletizing, carton closure, and bundling. It’s lightweight, easy to apply, and recyclable. Polypropylene strapping is known for its high elongation and recovery but loses tension over time, making it ideal for flexible loads. UV degradation is a concern with this type unless it is treated with UV inhibitors.

  2. Polyester Strapping (Poly Strapping)
Polyester strapping is one of the strongest plastic strapping materials and can replace steel in many applications. It is available in two forms: woven and composite.

    • Woven Polyester Strapping: Made from polyester filaments woven together, this strapping offers superior strength, flexibility, and durability. It is highly resistant to impacts and can absorb shocks without breaking. Woven polyester strapping is widely used in industries that handle heavy, rigid loads. It is often secured using a ratcheting tensioner and buckle, ensuring maximum tension retention.
    • Composite Strapping: Made by encasing polyester filaments in a polymer, composite strapping provides excellent resistance to environmental factors while being slightly less strong than woven polyester.
  3. Nylon Strapping
Nylon strapping is the strongest of the plastic strapping types and offers the greatest specific strength, meaning it provides excellent force-to-weight ratios. While incredibly durable, nylon strapping is more expensive and has largely been replaced by polyester in many applications due to cost considerations.

Applications of Woven Polyester Strapping

1. Securing Heavy Loads
Woven polyester strapping is ideal for securing heavy-duty loads in industries like shipping, construction, and manufacturing. Its high tensile strength and durability ensure that even large, rigid loads stay securely fastened during transportation or storage. Unlike steel, polyester strapping does not rust, stain, or snap back dangerously when cut.

2. Agricultural & Lumber Industry
Woven polyester strapping is used in agricultural and lumber industries to bundle and secure bales of crops, stacks of lumber, or other large, bulky items. Its strength and flexibility make it ideal for outdoor applications where loads are exposed to varying weather conditions, as it resists UV rays and moisture.

3. Surface Protection
Woven polyester strapping is gentle on surfaces, making it an excellent choice when the cargo requires protection from scratches or damage. This is crucial in industries dealing with delicate or finished products, such as furniture, electronics, and machinery.

4. Safe, Efficient Packaging
Polyester strapping is lightweight and easy to handle, reducing the risk of injuries when compared to steel strapping. This makes it a safer alternative in fast-paced environments where heavy-duty strapping is required.

Why Choose Woven Polyester Strapping?

Woven polyester strapping has become a popular alternative to steel due to several key benefits:

  • High Tension Retention: Polyester strapping holds its tension longer on rigid loads compared to polypropylene, ensuring a secure hold throughout the transportation or storage process.
  • Impact Resistance: Its elasticity allows it to absorb impacts and shocks without breaking, protecting the load from damage.
  • Non-corrosive: Unlike steel, polyester strapping will not rust, stain, or cause damage to the items being secured.
  • Lightweight and Easy to Use: Polyester strapping is easier to handle and apply compared to steel, making it a more efficient solution for bundling and securing products.
  • Weather Resistant: Woven polyester strapping maintains its shape and strength under harsh environmental conditions, including high temperatures, UV exposure, and moisture.

How Does Polyester Strapping Compare to Other Strapping Materials?

When selecting the appropriate strapping, it is essential to consider the characteristics of each type in relation to your load requirements.

  • Steel Strapping: The strongest but also the heaviest and most expensive option, steel strapping is ideal for securing very heavy loads. However, it can rust, stain cargo, and present safety hazards if handled improperly.
  • Polypropylene Strapping: An affordable solution for light-duty bundling, polypropylene strapping is widely used but lacks the tension retention and durability of polyester.
  • Nylon Strapping: Nylon offers the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any plastic strapping but is more costly, making it less common in today’s market compared to polyester.

How Do You Select The "Right" Strapping?

The key to selecting the strapping is to know your load characteristics and the strapping attributes.
